Monk Joseph Muñoz Cortes, the keeper of the Montreal myrrh-streaming icon of the Iberian Mother of God, was killed. Iberian Montreal Icon of the Mother of God and Her Guardian

The Montreal Iveron Icon was painted on Mount Athos in 1981 by a Greek monk from the original icon of Our Lady of the Goalkeeper.

In 1982, this icon was brought from Mount Athos to Montreal by Joseph Muñoz Cortez, a Spaniard by birth who had long converted to Orthodoxy. This is what happened, says Joseph Muñoz: “On November 24, at three o'clock in the morning, I woke up from a strong fragrance. At first I thought that it came from relics or a spilled bottle of perfume, but when I approached the icon, I was amazed: it was all covered with fragrant the world! I froze in place from such a miracle! "

Soon the myrrh-streaming icon was taken to the temple. Since then, the icon of the Mother of God has been constantly streaming myrrh, with the exception of Holy Weeks.

It is remarkable that myrrh flows mainly from the hands of the Mother of God and Christ, as well as from the star on the right shoulder of the Most Pure One. At the same time, the back of the icon is always dry.

The presence of the myrrh-streaming icon with its fragrant world spreads special grace. Thus, a paralyzed young man from Washington, by the grace of the Mother of God, was healed. In Montreal, the icon was brought to a seriously ill person who could not move. A prayer service and an akathist were served. He soon recovered. The miraculous icon helped a woman suffering from a severe form of pneumonia. A fourteen-year-old girl suffered from a severe form of leukemia. Putting great hopes on help from the miraculous icon, she asked to bring it to her. After praying and anointing with myrrh, the child's health began to improve rapidly and, to the surprise of her doctors, after a while, the tumors disappeared.

The miraculous image has already visited America, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe. And everywhere this icon radiated peace and love.

First of all, believers are struck by the strong fragrance of the oil flowing from the hands of the Mother of God and Christ, and sometimes from the star depicted on the right shoulder of the Most Pure. This distinguishes her from other miraculous icons, where tears flow from the eyes, as if the Mother of God was crying, while here She seems to be giving Her blessing.

Miro usually appears during prayer or shortly after it, in an amount depending on the event or the prayer zeal of those present. Sometimes it is so abundant that it appears through the protective glass and floods the support of the icon, the wall, the table. This happens on the days of great holidays, in particular, on the Dormition of the Mother of God.

There were also cases when, after the termination of the expiration, it resumed in an unexpected way. So, when visiting the Boston monastery, myrrh flowed out in streams, but then completely dried up when the icon was transferred to a nearby parish. Upon returning to the monastery, the stream resumed so strongly that it overtook the edge. In another case, after the distribution of peace to 850 pilgrims, the icon turned out to be dry, but arriving the next day at a parish where a mass of believers were waiting for it, it miraculously restored the world outflow. Only once did the myrrh disappear and did not expire for a relatively long time: on Holy Week 1983 from Holy Tuesday to Holy Saturday.

Miro flows down the icons, where the pieces of cotton are placed. Soaked, they are distributed to the worshipers. It was noticed that although myrrh dries up rather quickly, the fragrance continues for a long time, sometimes months, and intensifies during especially fervent prayers. Often it fills the place where the icon was (room, car).

The mystery of these signs confuses many skeptics. Indeed, one could imagine that some kind of fragrant liquid was deliberately introduced from the back of the icon. In Miami, a scientist had the opportunity to examine the icon from all sides and, having established that it was completely dry from behind, came to the conclusion that it was the greatest miracle of the 20th century. A special examination of a part of the upper edge of the icon showed that the image was painted on an ordinary wooden board that did not contain internal cavities and foreign inclusions. But such research has a limit. So, when skeptics wished to make a sample of the world for the purpose of analysis, they were denied this, for such an act is disrespect for the Mother of God. "The icon is in front of you, and no one encourages you to recognize a miracle, your business is to believe or refuse to believe," says Joseph Muñoz. One young man once answered him: "I see what is happening in front of me, but my mind is not able to believe it, but my heart believes it."

Everywhere, wherever this icon arrived, it spread love and harmony, as, for example, in one community, where quarreling parishioners again found their way to prayer and church unity. Her presence increases the fervor of prayer to such an extent that the liturgies celebrated during her time can be compared with the Easter ones, so fiery in the Orthodox Church.

There are many known cases of people returning to church, confession, communion. So, one poor woman, having learned about the death of her son, was preparing to take her own life, but, moved to the depths of her soul at the sight of the miraculous icon, she repented of her terrible intention and immediately confessed. The blessed influence of the Most Pure One awakens and transforms the faithful, often frozen in inert belief.

The icon's fame spread widely outside the Orthodox Church: many Catholics and Protestants came to venerate it ...

However, on the night of October 30-31, 1997, the keeper of the icon, Joseph Muñoz Cortez, was killed under mysterious circumstances, and the Miraculous Iberian disappeared without a trace ...

In Orthodoxy, veneration of the Myrrh-streaming Iveron-Montreal Icon of the Mother of God as miraculous has been established. It was written from the Athonite original of the Iberian Goalkeeper (Gatekeeper). There is ample evidence that the Montreal List has streamed myrrh almost continuously for 15 years (1982-1997). All these years, the image was in the possession of the curator Joseph Muñoz-Cortez.

Biographical portrait of the keeper

The birth of Joseph (Jose) Muñoz-Cortez took place on May 13, 1948. The boy was born by pious Catholic parents. They belonged to the Spanish aristocratic family, lived in the city of Valparaiso. Jose, as a child, discovered the makings of a painter. The boy and his parents wanted Jose to become an artist.

When the teenager was 14 years old and he lived with his parents already in Santiago, a wonderful event happened. Jose was on his way to a Catholic church. On the way, he heard wonderful singing. It came from the open church doors. It was the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. Jose could not resist, went inside.

The decoration of the church, the beauty of the icons and the divine services made a huge impression on Jose. Since then, the teenager began to attend the Orthodox Church. Two years later, with the permission of his mother, Jose was baptized into Orthodoxy by Archbishop Leontius of Chile.

For three years Joseph studied at an Orthodox college, studied icon painting. Chile did not have a large number of masters in this matter. Therefore, Joseph went to Montreal (Canada). Vitaly, Archbishop of Canada and Montreal, invited Joseph to move to the monastic monastery of St. Job of Pochaev, in the same place in Montreal. Shortly after the move, Joseph became a professor at the University of Montreal. Reads art history.

The history of the creation of the icon, its acquisition

In the fall of 1982, Joseph was called by the Lord to a special ministry. The Chilean-Canadian icon painter made a pilgrimage to Mount Athos. In the workshop of the Spaso-Nativity Skete, Muñoz Cortez was shocked by the meeting with the icon-painting face of the Iberian Mother of God. The image was painted a year before this event by the Greek hieromonk Chrysostom. The list is made with the legendary Iverian Goalkeeper.

Joseph decided to buy an icon, asked to sell him the icon. But a refusal was received. Then Joseph turned with prayers to the Mother of God. The young pilgrim asked permission to take the image to the American continent.

It was the last day of Joseph's stay on Athos. Just before leaving, when leaving the gates of the monastery, Muñoz Cortes was stopped by the schema-abbot Clement. He presented Joseph with the most precious gift - a list from the Iberian Goalkeeper that amazed the pilgrim.

On the way to the Athos port of Daphne, Joseph heard the command. Performing it, Muñoz-Cortez went to the walls of the Iberian Monastery. The pilgrim gave the list to the miraculous face of the Goalkeeper. Upon his return to Montreal, Joseph placed the brought icon in his room. Every night he spent reading in front of the face of an akathist.

The manifestation of miraculous power

On November 24, 1982, at about 3 am, Joseph woke up in his Montreal apartment from a strong scent. At first, he thought that the scent exudes a spilled bottle of perfume. Then Joseph considered the relics to be the source of the pleasant smell. When Muñoz-Cortez approached the list he had brought, he was amazed.

The face of the Mother of God was covered with a fragrant world. At first, oily moisture oozed from the hands of the Mother of God and the Divine Infant. Another star was streaming myrrh, located on the right shoulder of the Ever-Virgin. These manifestations were interpreted as a symbolic blessing.

During one of the services during Great Lent (1985), the glass of the icon case and the frame were allocated. The aromatic oil appeared in such abundance that it soaked the cover on the lectern. We first saw tears on an icon in August 1991.

Only before Easter the last 6 days of Lenten (Holy Week) did the icon become dry. But again light dew appeared on the icon-painting face on the morning of Great Saturday. During the morning Easter service, the procession of the cross, fragrant moisture oozed even on the hands of the one carrying the shrine. The back of the icon remained completely dry.

Fragrant oil usually appeared during prayers or shortly after. The amount of moisture exuded depended on the religious event, the prayer zeal of those present.

Miro could suddenly resume after the expiration stopped. When visiting the Boston monastery, fragrant moisture flowed out in streams. But when the icon was transferred to a nearby parish, the image stopped streaming myrrh. After the return of the Iberian-Montreal icon-painting face to the monastery, the unleavened stream resumed with extraordinary vigor.

The mystery of such signs haunted many skeptics. They assumed that a fragrant liquid was deliberately injected from the back. One scientist from Miami carefully examined the shrine from every angle. He established an absolutely dry state of the reverse side of the icon. I had to admit that the miraculous image was written on the most ordinary board. Internal cavities, foreign inclusions could not be found. Then the scientist recognized the greatest miracle of the twentieth century.

The Tragic and Martyrdom of the Guardian

Joseph Muñoz-Cortez visited the miraculous shrine in a large number of parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad. The icons were seen by the laity who visited the Orthodox Old Calendar churches in Australia, Bulgaria, Germany, the USA, France and other countries.

Muñoz Cortez often returned to the Holy Mountain with the icon; Joseph Athos also visited in the summer of 1996. He wanted to say goodbye to the schema-abbot Clement, who handed Cortes a miraculous list. The schemnik warned Joseph that in a year (1997) terrible events would take place.

In 1997, Joseph visited the monastery of St. Nicholas on the island of Andros. Priest Alexander Ivashevich accompanied him. The ancient wall face of the Mother of God, located in the monastery, began to tear profusely. Muñoz-Cortez admitted to his companion that he was expecting something terrible to happen in the near future. It happened a day later.

On the night of October 30-31, 1997, when the Satanic holiday of Halloween was celebrated, the Guardian of the Iberian-Montreal Mother of God was brutally murdered. The circumstances of the tragic death are very mysterious. The miraculous icon disappeared without a trace.

According to the investigation, it can be assumed that the Guardian was lured into a trap. To do this, they used the pretext that someone needs help. The examinations carried out prove the professionalism of the murderers and torturers. Numerous bodily mutilations proved that Joseph was martyred under torture.

13 days after his death, the body of Joseph was taken to the cemetery of the Holy Trinity Monastery (USA). The funeral service was planned to be held with a closed coffin. However, the will from above was different. The coffin was opened, those present did not find signs of decay on the mutilated body.

Two candles were placed on the grave of the tortured Muñoz-Cortez. They glimmered, without fading away, in the windy cemetery for 7 hours. Forty days have passed since the death of Joseph, and candles spontaneously ignited at his grave.

Manifested miracles

Muñoz Cortez took the shrine to many Orthodox parishes. The Iversko-Montreal Mother of God visited with her guardian in many countries, on different continents. For believers in America, Europe, Australia, the Image served as a source of all-merciful consolation, great joy.

By popular demand, photographs were taken of the Iveron-Montreal Icon. Some of them also streamed myrrh. Alexander Solzhenitsyn received one of the photographs of the Iveron-Montreal Icon and a cotton wool moistened with peace. He wrote to Muñoz-Cortez that the icon-healer heals not only bodies, but also sick souls.

Healing and fragrant mercy was poured out on the grieving and weak people who resorted to the Intercessor. Anointing with the miraculous world drove out the most serious ailments (sometimes incurable), revived dead souls.

Healings

There was always a tray near the Iberian-Montreal Icon. On it lay cotton wool, with which they collected myrrh. Then they were distributed and sent out to believers, suffering, asking. It happened that dried cotton wool miraculously re-filled with fragrant moisture. Sometimes there was an increase in the world collected in the vessel.

There are many testimonies of miraculous healings after anointing the sick and praying. Similar messages were received from recovered people from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Latvia, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden and other countries.

Germany

A boy of about five years old fell ill with an incurable disease. The child stopped eating, was melting before our eyes, extinguished like a candle. The parents assigned the boy to the hospital. They decided for themselves that they had given the child not to be cured, but to die.

But on time from America they sent a cotton wool soaked in fragrant moisture from the Iversko-Montreal Icon. On the following Saturday, the mother rubbed her son's body with this cotton wool. And on Monday morning the nurse called the woman. In an agitated voice, she said, “Something incredible has happened! The boy got out of bed and asked for something to eat. "

Several days passed. The child quickly recovered. The ailment finally receded, the boy became completely healthy.

France

An elderly French woman came to bow to the Iversko-Montreal Myrrh-streaming Icon. She was on crutches. Before leaving, the woman prayed beside the miraculous face. About a week later, this Frenchwoman arrived again without crutches. She told about miraculous healing.

The very next day after visiting the icon, the woman got out of bed and reached for her crutches. But suddenly the Frenchwoman felt that she did not need support. Since then, the woman has done without crutches.

In a clinic in the town of Vincent (a suburb of Paris), 28-year-old Jean-Louis Georges was lying with a crippled leg. After a road accident, the young man could not return to normal life for 2 years. Doctors decided on amputation.

The young Frenchman, who did not know God, gave himself up to despair, decided to commit suicide. But very opportunely he was told about the existence of the Iveron-Montreal Myrrh-streaming Icon. The shrine at that time was located 100 kilometers from Paris. Joseph brought the miraculous face to the Lesna convent. Jean-Louis Georges agreed to go to the meeting with the healing image.

When the prayer service ended, the priest moistened the cotton wool with fragrant moisture oozing from the icon. This fleece was put under the bandages to the sick Frenchman. However, Jean-Louis did not want to leave the church, he asked for confession. The priest explained to him that this was impossible, since the French was not Orthodox. But, heeding the prayers of the young man, the priest agreed to hold the conversation. Jean-Louis passionately repented of his sinful intent to commit suicide.

On the same day, the young Frenchman left for Paris. At night, the bandages fell from my leg in the most wonderful way. The pus from the wounds began to disappear, the skin began to clear. When Jean-Louis was discharged from the clinic, he talked about gaining deep faith in a previously unknown God. The young French made it a rule for himself to read the Akathist of the Mother of God every day before the morning meal.

USA

In 1991, the Iberian-Montreal icon was brought to one of the temples in Los Angeles. A parishioner kissed the miraculous face. The woman was old and had difficulty walking because she was bent over by paralysis.

Attaching herself to the image of the Most Pure One, the woman straightened up. Glorifying God and the Ever-Virgin, the healed woman easily left the temple.

Belgium

An ambulance brought a man to one of the Belgian hospitals. The nurse, being an Orthodox Christian, asked if the patient was dying. She was told that the man was already dead. Death came after suicide.

The nurse anointed the body of the deceased with a cotton swab dipped in fragrant moisture from the Iberian-Montreal Myrrh-Streaming Icon. At the same time, the woman asked the Mother of God to help the soul of the deceased.

The man opened his eyes and asked to call the priest. Having repented of what he had done, the man confessed. After that, the man lived for 2 days. None of the doctors were able to explain such a wonderful short-term return to life.

Russia

One day, a four-year-old boy could not avoid being badly injured. A child's little foot was caught in a faulty escalator ladder. The barbs had inflicted a fairly deep wound. It was impossible to look at the child's suffering without tears.

The family of this boy had a cotton wool with healing moisture from the Iversko-Montreal Myrrh-streaming Icon. Relatives prayed fervently to the Mother of God, smeared wounds with cotton wool all around. The attending physician was amazed when he saw a quickly healing wound. The upcoming operation was canceled, and the boy was soon released home.

Revival of love and harmony

The very presence of the Iberian-Montreal Mother of God greatly increased the gift of prayer. The liturgies, during which the miraculous face was celebrated, were extremely fiery. For the Orthodox Church, such services are comparable to Easter. The blessed influence of the Montreal Blessed One transformed the faithful, awakened those frozen in the stale belief.

Upon the arrival of the Iberian-Montreal Icon, peace, harmony and love were reborn in various places. So, the parishioners of one community quarreled among themselves. The miraculous face helped to find the path to church unity, to uniting prayer.

The Iberian-Montreal icon contributed to the return of people to churches, to confession and communion. There is a known case when a poor woman found out about the death of her son. She was preparing to end her life herself. But there was a sudden meeting with her miraculous face. The woman, moved to the deepest depths of her soul, repented. She immediately confessed her terrible intention.

Mysterious connections with the destinies of Russia

Although Joseph did not have a chance to bring the Iberian-Montreal icon to the Russian expanses, the Miraculous was somehow mysteriously connected with Russia. A special thread connects the Image with the Russian New Martyrs.

In the Reigning House of the Romanovs, the Mother of God the Goalkeeper has always been venerated. Gusodar Nikolai Alexandrovich, arriving in Moscow, applied to the miraculous icon-painting face of the Iveron Icon from the chapel at the Resurrection Gate. On the eve of her coronation, Alexandra, the future Empress, prayed at night in the chapel and asked for the intercession of the Mother of God. Alexandra's sister, Elizabeth, the Grand Duchess, often sought the protection of the Most High.

Muñoz placed the Iberian-Montreal Icon next to the headscarf (apostle) of the Monk Martyr Elizabeth Feodorovna. Her fragrant relics were discovered in Jerusalem in the year of the creation of the Iberian-Montreal list (1981). Miro appeared on this miraculous image a year after the holy glorification of the Tsar-Martyr, members of his family, the host of New Martyrs, Confessors of Russia in the Cathedral of the Sign in New York. This Glorification took place at night from October 31 to November 1, 1981. Many are inclined to consider these facts as special signs of God's Grace to the Passion-bearers, their worshipers.

The glory of the Iberian-Montreal Mother of God went beyond the limits of the Orthodox Church. Many Catholics and Protestants came to venerate the miraculous icon.

Was recently in memory of the Iberian Montreal Icon.

The story of the miraculous rescue of the plane.

Today the Mother of God saved us!
Before boarding a plane in Montreal, some man who can read Russian, going up to Jose (Joseph Muñoz-Cortez), read the embroidered words “Holy Mother of God, save us” on the cover containing the Myrrh-Streaming Icon and irony. The plane flew safely to Chicago and went to land, but the following happened: another plane that landed before it shot down a generator set, and the entire airport plunged into darkness. An order came immediately from the navigation tower not to land under any circumstances. Having received such an order, the pilot who almost
landed, had to turn the steering wheel abruptly, giving a strong speed. The plane rushed high, but lost its balance and began to fall in a zigzag manner. The doors of the shelves opened, and carry-on luggage rained down on people. There was a cry, a cry, and in this complete confusion Jose Muñoz took the Miraculous Myrrh-streaming Icon out of the case and raised IT high above everyone. Everything changed at once. The plane regained its balance and began to quietly circle over the city. Soon after, lighting at the airport was restored and the plane was cleared to land. When the passengers got out, the stewardess, saying goodbye to them, said: "Today the Mother of God saved us!"

THE BLISS OF PURITY WITH THE HEART, AS THE TIYA OF GOD WILL BE SEEED
On the night of October 31, 1997, Joseph Muñoz-Cortez, the curator of the Montreal miraculous Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, was killed in Athens. On the day when the Church remembers the Apostle Luke, according to the legend of the first icon painter, and many celebrate Halloween, our contemporary suffered torment for the faith of Christ and received the martyr's crown.

The path to Orthodoxy

Joseph (or in Spanish Jose) Muñoz-Cortez was born in 1948 in Santiago (Chile) and belonged to a very noble family - to the Spanish aristocrats Muñoz-Cortez. In addition to its antiquity, this family was distinguished by an ardent adherence to the Catholic religion. In 1962, passing by the Orthodox Church on the way to the church, young Joseph heard wonderful singing coming from the open doors, and his feet themselves carried him inside ... He came to Orthodoxy forever ...

Wonderful Icon

When Jose was asked why the Lord chose him as the keeper of the miraculous icon, he answered: “I always prayed to the Blessed Virgin and never asked for a miracle, never asked the Most Holy Virgin to give me any proof of Herself. I believe in the Mother of God as I believe in God. I really respect the Mother of God, because this was how I was taught in childhood by my mother. I believe that the Blessed Virgin manifests Herself where She wants to ”.....

Martyr's crown

He was found in a room at the Athens Grand Hotel. The door was closed from the inside, the maid could not enter the room in the morning. Room 860 was a corner room and opened onto a balcony, the only balcony in the Grand Hotel from which one can access the roof of the nearest building. The killers entered the room relatively easily and just as easily left, unnoticed. Romanian Nicolae Ciaru was brought before the court as the accused, but he, apparently, was not the main character. Presumably there were three killers: one held, the other tied his arms and legs, and the third struck. The assassination was carefully planned. The doctor who carried out the examination explained that in ordinary murders, victims are usually tied up in a hurry and carelessly. Joseph was tied very neatly and so as to cause him great suffering. The terrible tortures continued for about half an hour, after which Joseph died for a long time alone. A person who, during his lifetime, did not give a single reason to doubt his moral purity, after his painful death was also subjected to many reproaches, speculation and gossip appeared in the press, and only after some time did a reassessment of what had happened began.

Where the Miraculous Montreal Icon of the Mother of God is located is unknown.
Joseph Muñoz Cortez suffered for the true Orthodox faith, drinking the cup of sorrow one for all. He was killed by a Romanian Satanist who hates Orthodoxy. As the Tsar Martyr Nicholas II once suffered, having drunk the cup of sorrow for the whole of Russia alone, and, becoming like Christ, Joseph thereby cleansed us from corruption, so that it would be easier for us to sail on a spiritual ship on the sea of life. Joseph, for his holiness and devotion to the Church, had the gift of clairvoyance from God. A foreigner, a truly Orthodox soul, Joseph. Joseph Muñoz Cortez, as a faithful servant of the Mother of God, fulfilled Her blessing: he traveled to all Russian foreign parishes and monasteries. The Mother of God showed her mercy to the Russian people and the whole world, poured out grace on her icon. She sent her minister a martyr's death, the world poured out its blasphemy on him. But the Mother of God glorified him immediately after his death: when the coffin was opened, a white rose lay on it, as it had just been laid as a sign of his purity, purity and holiness. The relics were incorruptible,
although they lay for 13 days, they gave off a subtle scent of roses. On the thirteenth day after his death, the body of the murdered man arrived at the Trinity Monastery in Jordanville. It was there that Brother Joseph commanded to bury himself. They were going to bury the martyr in a closed coffin, but by order of Archbishop Laurus, a plastic bag was opened, in which the body was transported. The traces of suffering and torture he underwent in the last hours of his life were clearly visible: broken fingers in the joints, crimson scars from a rope on his face, neck, in places where his hands were tied. But everyone was struck by the absence of any signs of decay.
The multitudes of people from all over the world who arrived in Jordanville in those days testify to the fertile atmosphere of the funeral. One former monk at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York, wrote of the mood on the day of Brother Joseph's funeral service and funeral:
“It seemed to me that I was attending the services of Great Saturday, I recalled the reverent presence before the Shroud, when the souls of believers with fear and tenderness behold the saving Passion of the Lord and remember His burial. Everything that happened ... was also mysteriously stately and lightly sad. Of course, there were also tears, and how could our eyes refrain from them, when in the daylight we made out more clearly (his) exhausted face, (his) martyr's body, adorned with ulcers, as if some kind of Divine pearl. We saw (his) hands, on which remained crimson scars from the bonds with which the executioner tied (him) ... ".
One servant of God who came from Russia and went to the burial of Joseph, said: “I had the feeling that I was not present at the funeral service and funeral, but at the rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy. I quite clearly realized that even in those minutes we were all taken out of the church and shot, it would be all the same - we won! "
When Joseph was carried to the cemetery, the ailing hieromonk Averky, unable to attend the funeral service due to his weakness, left his cell to observe the funeral procession, and at that time he felt the strong scent of peace. The same scent was heard by other pilgrims. So the Mother of God anointed Her martyr with incorruption and the fragrance of the heavenly world as a sign of his acceptance into the Heavenly Kingdom in the face of a martyr. On the fortieth day after the death of Joseph Muñoz-Cortez, the keeper of the Myrrh-streaming Icon of the Iberian Mother of God, on his grave, located in the monastery cemetery blown by the winds from all sides, one more miracle could be observed - candles never extinguished in the snow and in the wind ...
Currently, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia is collecting documents for the possible canonization of the custodian of the Montreal Iveron Icon, Br. Jose Muñoz-Cortez. A diocesan commission was created, which will then transfer the collected documents to the Synodal Commission for further consideration.
Metropolitan Hilarion (Corporal), First Hierarch of ROCOR

The ameny Athos paths lead to a small bay next to which the stone walls of Iveron rise. It was here that the famous icon of the Mother of God, named Iverskaya, sailed along the waves.

During the time of Byzantine iconoclasm, a warrior burst into a pious house and hit this image with a spear. And then, to his horror, blood began to flow down the face of the Mother of God. He fell to his knees. On his advice, the widow, the owner of this icon, saving the image from desecration, let it go with prayer along the waves. Several centuries have passed. And so he miraculously, in a column of light that rose to the very heavens, sailed to the shores of Athos. The icon was placed in the altar of the temple of the Iversky Monastery, but in the morning it was above the gates of the monastery. This went on for several days. Finally, the Mother of God appeared in a dream to the elder and said: "I do not wish to be guarded by you, but I want to be your Guardian ... As long as you see My icon in this monastery, until then the grace and mercy of My Son will not fail to you."

According to the Athonite legend, before the End of the World, Athos will plunge into the abyss of passions. And then the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Goalkeeper, will leave the Holy Mountain in the same miraculous way as it appeared. This will be one of the omens of the Second Coming.

Now that old gate is closed. Next to them is a small church, in which the miraculous Iberian icon is located. Everyone can peer into a wonderful image. It differs from most of the lists we know. On the chin - as if a fresh hole. A trickle of dark caked blood froze around his neck.

The Montreal Iveron Icon was painted on Mount Athos in 1981 by a Greek monk from the original icon of Our Lady of the Goalkeeper. In 1982, Jose (Joseph) Muñoz Cortez, a Spaniard who converted to Orthodoxy from Catholicism, made a pilgrimage to Mount Athos. Having lost his way, he stopped for the night in a small Christmas skete, where he saw a marvelous newly painted image of the Iberian Mother of God. He fervently prayed that this image would be with him. In the morning, the abbot came to Jose with the icon in his hands and said that the Mother of God wanted to let her icon go with him into the world. Before leaving Athos in the Iberian Monastery, Jose attached the icon to the ancient miraculous prototype.

Returning to Montreal, he placed it in his home iconostasis next to the particles of the relics of the Kiev Caves saints and the Apostle of the Great Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and daily read the Akathist in front of the new shrine.

At about 4 a.m. on November 24, 1982, three weeks after his arrival, Jose woke up from a strong fragrance that filled the whole house, and saw that the icon was covered with drops of moisture. Soon the myrrh-streaming icon was taken to the temple.

From that time on, she streamed myrrh incessantly. At first, myrrh was poured out only from the hands of the Mother of God, from the star on Her left shoulder and from the hands of the Infant God, which was interpreted as a symbol of blessing. And in 1985, during one of the services of Great Lent, even the frame and glass of the icon case began to emit myrrh in such abundance that the cover on the analogue was all wet. Near the icon there was always a tray with cotton wool for collecting the world, which were then distributed to believers. Only in the days of Holy Weeks did the icon remain dry. On the morning of Great Saturday, light dew appeared on it, and during Easter Matins and the procession of the cross, the exuded myrrh flowed even through the hands of the one who carried the shrine. At the same time, the back side of the icon was always dry.

Jose (Joseph) Muñoz Cortez

In August 1991, tears were first seen on the icon. Jose Muñoz constantly traveled with the shrine to Orthodox parishes in many countries and continents, where it served as a source of great joy and consolation for believers. Fragrant and healing mercy was poured out on people who came to the Intercessor in sorrow and illness. Through the anointing with the wonderful world, heavy, sometimes incurable ailments went away, dead souls revived.

In the families of pious Christian prayer books, simple photographs of the Montreal Icon exude myrrh. Such cases are known in America, Europe, Russia. It also happened that some of the dried up fleeces were suddenly filled with peace again, or it miraculously multiplied in a vessel.

The miraculous icon is mysteriously connected with the fate of Russia, with the feat of the Russian New Martyrs. The reigning House of Romanovs have always reverently venerated the Mother of God - the "Goalkeeper". Coming to Moscow, Tsar Nicholas Alexandrovich first of all applied himself to the miraculous Iveron Icon at the Resurrection Gate. The future Empress Alexandra, on the eve of her coronation, prayed at night in the chapel, asking for the intercession of the Mother of God. And Her sister, Grand Duchess Elizabeth, often appealed for the patronage of the Most High.

On the Iberian-Montreal icon, put by Muñoz next to the apostle of the Monk Martyr Elizabeth Feodorovna (whose fragrant relics were discovered in Jerusalem in 1981), myrrh appeared a year after the glorification of the Tsar-Martyr, His Family and the host of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia, Cathedral of the Sign in New York (October 31 - November 1, 1981). Is this not a sign of God's favor to the worshipers of the Passion-bearers.

The fame of the Montreal miraculous icon spread far beyond the boundaries of the Orthodox Church. Many Catholics and Protestants came to honor her.

However, on the night of October 30 to 31, 1997, something terrible happened: the keeper of the icon, Joseph Muñoz Cortez, was killed under mysterious circumstances, and the Miraculous Iberian Church disappeared without a trace.

Holy Mother of God, pray to God for us!

Mon-re-al-skaya Iversky iko-na was-la-pi-sa-na on Athos in 1981 as a Greek mo-na-khom with ori-gi-na-la iko- us Bo-go-ma-te-ri Vra-tar-ni-tsy (first-in-ob-times).
In 1982, Joseph Mu-nyos Kor-tes brought this icon-well from Afon to Mont-re-al.
Joseph (Ho-ze) Mu-nyos Kor-tes, is-pa-nets in pro-ex-wandering, came-over-le-zal to bla-go-ro-no-mu, noble -moo ro-doo. Ro-di-te-li Yosi-fa were zealous-mi-ka-li-ka-mi. As Joseph himself spoke about himself, as a boy with a knapsack behind his back he went to the most glorious temple, and since then his heart its na-ho-di-moose there. Pra-in-glory-took in four-tyr-for-twenty years; Se-my with no-no-no-no-it-went to the choice of Yosi-fa. Joseph Mu-nyos Kor-tes was an iko-no-pis-cem, a disciple of Ni-ko-lai She-li-ho-va, pre-po-da-val in Mon-re-al-skom uni -ver-si-te-te history of arts. Following the Holy Mount Athos in 1982, re-ver-no-lo all the life of Yosi-fa. Here's how it was. Ras-ska-zy-va-et Joseph Mu-nyos.
"One-na-zhda at the time of our pa-lom-no-thing on Athos (there were three of us) after a few hours, would we go for-blu- It had begun to dusk. ”So, it would have been sooner to find a night, lay down in some kind of mo-na-so-re.
Walking along the tro-pin-ke, we see a little poor skete. It contains four-tyr-nadtsat mo-na-hov-greeks for-ni-ma-lis iko-no-pi-su. They received us with joy. A little bit from-doh-nuv, we began to consider their work.
One of my companions, who knew the Greek language, began to speak with mo-na-ha-mi and told them all about US. I very attentively began to examine the icons. Unexpectedly, but my gaze remained on the wonderful, wondrous icon of Bo-go-ma-te-ri.
I could not take my eyes off her, and then I began to ask my-na-ha to pro-give it to me. He gave me a hall, explaining that this is an image created by Father Khri-zo-sto-m, one of the first, na-pi-san-ny -Zan-tiy-sky letter. I spent the night in ski-that, from-sto-yal Li-tour-giyu. During the singing "Do-wait-but there is ..." I, on the wheels, pro-forces the Heavenly Tsar-tsu to let the holy image be with me. After the pro-of-not-sen-noy prayer-you, I felt-the-soul-peace-of-peace, as if the assurance that Pre Holy De-va will go with us.
In the morning, everything is mo-na-hi about us, but the igu-me-na wasn’t there. And now, in the after-nyuyu mi-nu-tu-ed in front of our ear-house from the mo-na-st-ry, we will see him. He quickly descended the stairs with the right ikon in his hands. Coming to me, he said that he would give me an iko-well, since she should be with me. I wanted to pay for the icon, knowing the modest image of the life of the mo-na-hos and their need. Igu-men strictly said that it was impossible to take money for such Holy-you-nu money.
My body was covered with mu-rush-ka-mi, I felt that something unusual was happening. I did-re-cross-stil-sya, al-lo-val iko-well, and made a vow that this image would never become a source of no-one - generic.
Immediately after this, we went to the Iversky Monastery. Here we are allowed to come-to-live according to the yes-ren-ny ikon-well to her first-in-ob-ra-zu. In the cha-so, we stood on the col-le and, looking at the Holy-you-nu, measured it in the prayer in front of the Iberian icon.
He was so great, so si-i-yu-shche-siv, from-lu-chan such a spiritual force, that it was difficult to take him long! The hiero-mo-nah could-lo-live according to the iko-well given to me to ori-gi-na-lu.
We returned to Mont-re-al 3 but-yab-rya 1982. Iko-well, I put-between-du-ts-ts-mi from the mighty of some saints Ki-e-in-Pe-ch-lavra and apo-so- no-one pre-do-do-no-che-no-tsy Ve-li-koi princess Eli-za-ve-you Fe-o-do-rov-ny. All the time here the lam-pa-da was warm and every day, before going to bed, I read the Pre-holy De-ve aka-fist.
24 no-yab-rya at three o'clock-sa no-chi I woke up from strong bla-go-ear. Vna-cha-le-du-mal, that it comes from the mighty or once-if-that-go fla-ko-na du-hov, but, after-going to the icon, I in-ra-zil-Xia! She was all covered with blah-ho-ear! I froze in the place of such a miracle! "
Soon, mi-ro-to-chi-vaya iko-na was-la from-not-se-na in the doorway of the Russian Pra-glorious Church in Mon-re-a -le and po-ka-za-na mit-ro-li-tu Vi-ta-liyu. Vla-du-ka at once ob-ter va-that do-su-ha all the iko-well and carried it all over the place-no-pits of the three-floor-no-two -rya. When he returned to the church, then the iko was again covered by the world, which flowed through his hands. Vla-du-ka-klo-nil-sya icon and said that pro-out-goes ve-li-something chu-do. Since then, the iko-na of God-zhi-ei Ma-te-ri is a hundred-yan-no mi-ro-to-chit, except for the Passion Weeks.
For-me-cha-tel-but, that the world is-te-ka-e is the main image from the hands of Bo-go-ma-te-ri and Spa-si-te-la, and also from the star, on the right shoulder, on the right shoulder. - where su-haya.
The presence of the world-ro-to-chi-voyage of the icon with its bla-e-ear-yu-yu-r-r-r-s-r-a-n-a-n-is especially blah-to-give. In addition, the iko-na carries the doctor-che-va-tion of souls and te-forest.
There are many known cases of people coming to the temple-ma, is-by-ve-di, at-a-part. So, one poor woman, having learned about the death of her son, had to lose her life, but, three-well -that to the deep-be-ny do-shi with the see-de of the chu-do-creative-noy icon, rass-ka-i-las in his terrible na-me-re-nii and immediately flax-but-in-ve-da-las.
Iko-na mi-ro-to-chi-la 15 years old. On the night from 30 to 31 October 1997, the temple-ni-tel of the icon Iosif Mu-nyos Kor-tes was brutally killed in Afi-nakh, and Chu-do-creative Iver- sky devil-trace-but pro-pa-la ...
